If you are looking into the various financial supports available for a PhD student in India then the fellowships/scholarships broadly fall into two categories existing in silos: Industry Support or Government Support In an industry fellowship, companies like Google, Facebook, IBM, Adobe etc aid with industry mentor and a stipend of up-to 4 years, if your thesis area aligns with broader area of work done by the company. The Government fellowship are usually stipends based support, contingent upon clearing the Government's qualifying exams (UCG-NET,JRF). In order increase the public-private partnership for research and innovation, a joint initiative was launched by the the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB-DST) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in form of the Prime Minister’s Fellowship Scheme for Doctoral Research. Around 100 PhD applicants are annually awarded this fellowship (for a period of 4 years).
